God decided to make a brand-new creation. He shaped the first man, Adam, out of plain earthly clay. Then, God called all the angels together in the heavenly throne room. He gave them a direct command: be of service to this newly created form of life—mankind (Qur’an 2:34, 15:28-31).
Before continuing, we must define what an angel is. Angels are not robots. They have free will. They are servants and employees in God’s household. When God assigns an angel a job, He gives them the exact abilities needed to complete their assignment.
When they are “on the clock,” they operate with full ability. When they are not performing a task, they relinquish those heavy abilities and simply live in the heavenly realms. Some angels are naturally more reliable workers than others.
To illustrate the service relationship, consider a waiter. The waiter works for the owner, not the customers. The owner sets the menu. The waiter brings the approved items. In this cosmic structure, God is the Owner and Chef, angels are the waiters, and mankind are the customers being served but only allowed to order from the approved menu.
There is a strict rule: customers cannot mistreat the staff. The Qur’an warns that anyone hostile to God, His messengers, or His angels—including Michael and Gabriel—will find God hostile to them (Qur’an 2:98). The New Testament reinforces this by commanding kindness to strangers, because one may unknowingly be entertaining an angel (Hebrews 13:2).
The simplest definition of an angel is this: an angel is a specialized servant of God who follows His Lord’s Commands.
The ancient Midrash designates the specific tasks of the archangels.
One high-ranking servant refused the new service order. His name was Uriel, also called Satan or Iblis. He looked at Adam with disgust.
“I am better than him,” Satan said. “You made me from fire and him from clay. I will not bow to clay” (Qur’an 7:12).
Satan walked out, choosing ego and domination over obedience to God.
God turned to Michael and Gabriel. “Where do you two stand in this rebellion?”
Michael and Gabriel exchanged a very quick, nervous look. They stood up straight, trying to look as innocent as possible.
"Oh, yeah, sure, Boss!" Michael blurted out quickly. "We are totally with you! No problem at all!"
"Yeah, completely!" Gabriel chimed in, nodding his head up and down rapidly. "Team God all the way. We would never rebel against you!"
God stared at them for a long moment. He looked completely unamused and highly doubtful.
Then, another angel stepped forward. It was Raphael. He didn't have a loud or aggressive personality. He was a steady, quiet force with an ingrained fealty that stemmed from the fact that he was older than the others. This wasn't the first time he had watched a universe come and go.
Raphael said “You know me, Lord. I will never defy You.”
God nodded. “I know.”
God realized He had a rebellion. Satan was gone. Michael and Gabriel were looking nervous. Even loyal angels needed a test. God looked at the void below Heaven and decided this creation would be a test—the physical universe.
He did not announce the test. He simply set it in motion.
“I am building a temporary school,” God said. “It will be full of pain, limits, and hard choices.”
God wove Satan’s pride into the design. “You have a limited delay. Go down there. Everyone who follows you will go to hell with you. But you cannot touch those who remain loyal to Me.”
The test began. No one knew they were being graded.

When God realized He had a rebellion among the heavenly host, He designed the physical universe as a structured exam. The test was not announced. No angel was told it was an evaluation. God simply set the system in motion.
The test measures one thing: loyalty and fealty to the Lord’s Commands. Every angel, every human, and every decision inside the physical world becomes part of this exam. The universe functions as a temporary school built to reveal the true nature of each soul.
Satan’s pride was woven directly into the design. He was granted a limited delay and permitted to attempt to lead humans away from God’s Ways. But he was forbidden from touching those who remain loyal. This restriction defines the exam’s boundary conditions.
The loyalty and fealty test runs silently. No one inside the incubator is told when they are being graded. Every choice reveals whether a being follows the Lord’s Commands or follows their own ego.
The test’s core rule is absolute: those who remain loyal to the Lord’s Commands cannot be touched by Satan. Those who do not remain loyal fail the exam and even the angels themselves are being judged by God.
God immediately evicted Satan. “Get out. Hell is guaranteed for you and anyone who follows you.”
Satan vowed revenge. “I will ambush them on Your straight path—from every direction” (Qur’an 7:16–17).
This courtroom scene is repeated seven times in the Qur’an (2:34, 7:11–18, 15:28–44, 17:61–65, 18:50, 20:116, 38:71–85). Seven is the number of divine completion. The repetition seals the parameters of the test.
God was not worried. “Go ahead. Try your hardest. But you will have no power over My true servants (Qur’an 17:65). I will fill Hell with you and those who follow you.”
Satan fell from Heaven instantly. There was no war. No struggle. At God’s command, Satan was gone.
Before his fall, Satan was named Uriel. In Hebrew, “El” means “God.” High-ranking angels carry the “El” suffix as a badge of connection to the Source.
When Uriel rebelled, God removed his badge. “You do not wear My name anymore.”
Uriel lost his “El.” His identity collapsed. He reinitialized under a new title: Lucifer (Isaiah 14:12). Without “El,” it was hollow. He was no longer a radiant being—only a spark falling into darkness.
Scripture warns that “Satan masquerades as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). He is not an angel anymore. He lost his badge and his connection. His bright appearance is a costume—a mask of his old job.
Satan cannot recruit by being obvious. If he appeared openly, humans would run back to God. So he lies. He makes bad things look good and good things look boring. He whispers deceits to make decay look appealing.
Satan does not force anyone. He sets traps. He studies desires and weaknesses—money, fame, pride—and uses them as bait. He agrees with worst instincts, making people think they are following themselves while he leads them toward failure in the loyalty test.
