The latest satellite analyses describe the Thwaites Eastern Ice Shelf as behaving like a structure “hanging on by a thread” — a phrase used by multiple glaciologists to characterize the partial detachment of its last remaining pinning point. This pinning point once stabilized the shelf by anchoring it to the seabed; its weakening signals imminent structural failure.
